Your garage door is not only highly visible outside your home, but it's also the entrance you probably use the most to come and go and welcome guests. For this reason, replacing it is one of the best ways to add a little curb appeal to your place. Weather damage, wear and tear, upgrades and safety concerns are also some common reason why people opt to replace their garage doors. If you're in the market for a new one, here are some places where you may want to start your search.

Home Depot

Most people have a big box hardware store in their neighborhood, like Home Depot, and for many, it's the best place to start when shopping for a new garage door. The Home Depot website has a guide on its site dedicated to choosing the right garage door by style, customization options, insulation options, additional features and installation options. Once you have an idea of what you want, you can shop from the company's selection of doors, narrowing your options by size, features, colors and other options. You can also find out if the door you want is available in your local store for pickup. Home Depot also has a team that will install your door for you.

Lowe's

If you have a Lowe's in your neighborhood or you just prefer shopping there, either online or in person, you'll find a similar selection and prices there. Like Home Depot, Lowe's offers a guide on its website that helps you through the process of deciding what type of door you want, including how to measure the right size, the differences in styles, what features you might want to add and even what type of door you may want to buy depending on what you use your garage for. You'll also set up an appointment to talk with a sales associate who can further help pick the door you want. Once you choose a door from Lowe's, the company will install it. Both Lowe's and Home Depot offer financing options if you can't afford the door up front.

Local Independent Sellers

If there's not a big box store nearby, or you just don't want to utilize one, you can always look for a small local garage store seller in your area. Much of the time, these companies install the doors too. This is the best option if you want a customized door that isn't quite like the ones available in stores, as many of these companies do the custom work themselves. Some independent garage door companies sell doors made exclusively from certain manufacturers. To find a trustworthy garage door seller and installer in your community, ask your friends, family and neighbors who they use. Check online reviews, and call around asking for quotes and credentials.

The Manufacturer

While you can't usually buy a garage door straight from the manufacturer, the company's website may be a great place to start shopping. If you have your measurements and a photo of your home, many manufacturers have software available on their sites that allow you to see what types of doors look best on your house. You can play around with it until you find something you like. The manufacturer site will also typically have a page that allows you to find an authorized dealer in your area, whether it's a hardware store or an independent shop. You can then take the information and contact the dealer to discuss the details.

Doing It Yourself

Most of the time, when you buy a door from a company, they'll provide the installation services. Even if you love doing DIY projects around the house, it's probably best to go with a professional in most cases. Garage doors are large, and they can present a safety hazard if they aren't installed properly. If you don't get it just right, the door may not work correctly, which can also cause a major headache. Professional installers can get the door installed within a few hours usually, while it may take much longer for a non-professional to attempt the task.
